Beginnings of RCW

Updated: Mar 19, 2023

Believe it or not, the first table ever made was never even done under the RCW banner. It was simply made to replace my parents' crummy old table for years. At the time, Neal was still working as a trucker full time and would be gone for days at a time, so he made this new table in the limited time he was home as a hobby. Once it was complete, we put it in the kitchen, and then he left for a couple days on a trip. Once he returned, the table was gone; shocked, Neal asked my mom what had happened. She simply looked at him, smiled, and said, "I sold it!". Then she asked if he could make another one; this was the beginning of what RCW would become, as after that table was completed, it was also sold, and another person had ordered another table.

It continued as a hobby like this for almost two years as all new products were of customers asking if it is something that he could make, and being ever the optimist Neal always said, "yeah, I can do that".

Flash forward to the summer of 2021, when I entered the picture looking for a job to give me business experience, I couldn't seem to find anything. I asked if I could learn woodworking and work with my dad for a time until I could find something else. This is when I began to learn the trade and build our website and online presence. It took me a couple months to learn enough to be self-sufficient in producing furniture, but I was most helpful on the business administration side. Once I started being more help than hindrance, we began thinking of a name for the business. We had many name options but couldn't decide on one for months. Until finally, we chose Railway Custom Woodworking. Even though it can be a bit of a mouthful, it felt right, especially as our last name Roehl is pronounced "rail."

To this day, it remains a father-son business or, as my dad would call it, a son-father business. We would love anyone interested in some new furniture to come to check out what we offer. We love chatting with new people whether or not you end up ordering from us!
